چکیده

PSMs have been widely and successfully used in many organisations, but the reliance on face-to-face meetings and workshops makes a typical PSM project difficult and time-consuming to organise, and means that the process may only involve a narrow cross-section of the organisation. Yet much interaction in organisations is neither face-to-face nor even synchronous. This research seeks to 1) explore how the issues which arise in moderating such distributed interaction differ from the issues involved in facilitating a workshop; and 2) identify the circumstances under which it makes sense to consider using the distributed mode of interaction within a PSM process. Three pairs of action research case studies using a distributed variant on the SODA process are described, together with our answers to the above questions. Introduction In contrast to traditional methods of OR analysis, Problem Structuring Methods (PSMs) and related methodologies such as Decision Conferencing focus on helping organisational actors arrive at a shared understanding and way forward on some issue of concern. Such methodologies have been widely and successfully used in organisations (Rosenhead and Mingers, 2001). A characteristic of PSMs is their extensive use of workshops, where participants will create a model “on-the-fly”. Because of this reliance on workshops, while delivering significant value to the organisation overall, PSMs can be very costly in terms of participant time, as well as in financial terms if the organisation is not physically collocated. Moreover, because involvement is restricted to

The impact of contingency factors on validation of problem structuring methods

Although much has been written about validating DSS and other ‘hard’ OR models, less has been written about validating ‘soft’ OR models. This paper seeks to determine which contingency factors known to influence DSS validation are also important factors influencing PSM (problem structuring methods) validation. In addition, after consultation with PSM experts other contingency factors influencin...

Understanding behaviour in problem structuring methods interventions with activity theory

This article argues that OR interventions, particularly problem structuring methods (PSM), are complex events that cannot be understood by conventional methods alone. In this paper an alternative approach is introduced, where the units of analysis are the activity systems constituted by and constitutive of PSM interventions. The paper outlines the main theoretical and methodological concerns th...

A knowledge centred framework for collaborative business process modelling

Purpose – The paper aims to present the design rationale, the structure and the use of a web-based information systems framework for collaborative business process modelling. Design/methodology/approach – By viewing process modelling as a “problematic situation” that entails a considerable amount of social and knowledge activity in order to be resolved, a novel process modelling construct has b...

Software-engineering challenges of building and deploying reusable problem solvers

Problem solving methods (PSMs) are software components that represent and encode reusable algorithms. They can be combined with representations of domain knowledge to produce intelligent application systems. A goal of research on PSMs is to provide principled methods and tools for composing and reusing algorithms in knowledge-based systems. The ultimate objective is to produce libraries of meth...

Problems in Indexing Problem Solving Methods

Organizing PSM into a some library for reuse reveals two related problems that have thus far received little explicit attention: What is the scope of reuse of a PSM? How distinctive/similar are PSM? In considering the first question, the working hypothesis in constructing such libraries, and in particular the CommonKADS library, has been that PSM are task specific, and that therefore the major ...
